I got a nice birthday gift while we were on holiday in Bali. I got to spend two days joining Bali Reptile Rescue to go to West Bali and join them to try and photograph wild snakes. Of course, the main attraction was the chance to see the King Cobra but I like all snakes so jumped at the opportunity.
The trip turned out great as we not only got to see the King Cobra, but also various other species of snakes.
Bali Reptile Rescue
The trip was organized by Bali Reptile Rescue and outside of searching for wild snakes and going out on their calls with the team, I also spent some time with their resident snakes. I've separated out the snakes that were held in the Center versus the ones encountered in the wild.
This blue pit viper and the two adult King Cobras were residents in the rescue center (ie. these snakes were captive).
Day 1 - Daytime excursion
During the first day outing we managed to find a Black Copper Rat Snake, a Reticulated Python and relocated a Javan Spitting Cobra.
Day 1 - Nighttime excursion
Our nighttime excursion took us to another forest area where we saw a resting Kingfisher, a Bronzeback and a Lesser Sunda Pit Viper. We moved to a location by the sea where there were several Banded Sea Kraits about to round off the night.
Day 2 - Daytime excursion
The second day saw us get called out to relocate a juvenile King Cobra. It took us some time to find it, and then we were able to enjoy this magnificent snake. I played around and took several photos with and several photos without use of the flash.
Bonus Nighttime excursion
A few nights later I got a call whether I wanted to join an extra night out to search for more snakes. A short exciting motor ride later, we found a couple of Mangrove Cat Snakes, one of which was white!
